HOUSTON In just over a month, Southern Baptists of Texas Convention church leaders will head to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston for the Aug. 10 EQUIP Conference. Adam Mathews, pastor of Nolan River Road Baptist Church in Cleburne, values the training EQUIP provides for ministry leaders and volunteers.
“We initially began attending the EQUIP Conference as training for our Sunday School leadership and teachers,” he told the TEXAN, focusing on specific needs for senior adults, youth ministry and leadership. “As a pastor, I am grateful our leaders were able to gain fresh insight and perspective from people who are being used of the Lord in big ways and then bring it back to our church,” Mathews said.
In preparation for the training, Mathews said leaders asked themselves:
- Where do I need to grow the most in this season of ministry?
- Where am I trying to see this ministry go in the future?
- What would I like to see this ministry accomplish through our local body of believers?
- What can I do, as a leader or teacher, to see these things happen?
By selecting breakout sessions that address obstacles the church wants to overcome, participants found the training to go beyond shared information to gaining help unique to their situations. “Last year we were able to attend sessions that ranged in topic from Sunday School to church finance to worship to being a multicultural church body to church bylaws and more,” Mathews explained.
“In one day, even if I had the knowhow and experience, I could not have trained my church leaders in so vast an array of topics as they were able to receive from the Equip Conference,” he added.
