HOUSTON As messengers and guests celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention at the annual meeting this November, they will mark the occasion with the theme “Entrusted: A Gospel Legacy for the Coming Generations.”
Meeting Nov. 12-13 at Second Baptist Houston’s north campus in Kingwood, SBTC President Juan Sanchez finds value in looking to the past in a way that sets a course for the future.
“Reflecting on the past is important. It helps us appreciate the good that has happened before us; it reminds us that we are building on a foundation laid by the faithful who came before us,” Sanchez said. “But looking back becomes dangerous when it turns into nostalgia – the longing for “better” days gone by,” he warned.
“We look back in order to see our way forward, overcoming previous mistakes and preparing to pass the baton to the next generation. It is our prayer that when we gather in Houston this year for the SBTC annual meeting, November 12-13, we would model what it looks like to look back in celebration and thanksgiving and entrust the next generation with the stewardship of the gospel that our Lord Jesus has entrusted to us,” Sanchez said, urging Southern Baptists in Texas to “make every effort to join us.”
Following the pattern that has been well-received the last few years, eight convention sermons will be delivered sequentially through 2 Timothy during the meeting. The expositional sermons will be preached by Texas pastors David Fleming of Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, Greg Matte of Houston’s First Baptist Church, Jordan Rogers of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Nederland, Juan Sanchez of High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin, Terry Turner of Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church in Mesquite, Afshin Ziafat of Providence Church in Frisco, as well as SBTC Executive Director Jim Richards and a concluding sermon by SBC President J. D. Greear, pastor of The Summit Church in Durham, N.C.
Sunday, Oct. 28, has been designated as a Day of Prayer for SBTC annual meeting, and churches are encouraged to set aside time during their worship services to pray for the meeting and the work of the convention.
